Kooksoondang Surpasses $10 Million in Traditional Liquor Exports for Two Consecutive Years
Achieved Record High Export Value of $10.7 Million Last Year
Kooksoondang announced on the 21st that its export revenue last year reached a record high of 10.7 million dollars, surpassing 10 million dollars in export revenue for two consecutive years.
Kooksoondang began exporting Makgeolli in 1993 by developing the country's first canned Makgeolli, ‘Bio Tak’. Currently, it exports Baekseju, Makgeolli, and collaborative Makgeolli to over 50 countries worldwide. The largest export market is the United States, which recorded the highest export revenue last year by achieving 3 million dollars for the first time as a single country. In 2022, Kooksoondang expanded its export regions annually by starting exports to Central and South American countries.
To expand overseas markets, Kooksoondang has promoted the export of traditional liquor under various brands, which has led to achievements in pioneering new markets. Last year, Kooksoondang exported a total of 27 brands, an increase of 8 items compared to 2021. Notably, last year, the Beopgochangsin brand, which restored lost Korean liquors, and collaborative Makgeolli were newly exported, contributing to the premiumization and diversification of traditional liquor exports.
The number of brands exporting over 1 million dollars annually also increased by one to five last year compared to the previous year. Kooksoondang’s ‘100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli,’ which started exporting in 2020, has become a key export product thanks to the expansion of the probiotic product market considering health functionality in major export countries. ‘Kooksoondang Saeng Makgeolli’ has been steadily popular in overseas markets since it was the first raw Makgeolli exported to the United States in 2009. Kooksoondang Saeng Makgeolli is a Makgeolli developed by applying Kooksoondang’s ‘Makgeolli Fermentation Control Technology’ to keep the unique plant-based probiotics of raw Makgeolli alive for a long time. To export Saeng Makgeolli, Kooksoondang established a cold chain system throughout the entire distribution process from Korea to overseas consumers.
Kooksoondang’s traditional liquor exports contribute to the overseas advancement of Korean agricultural products by brewing high value-added liquor using domestic agricultural ingredients. After receiving the export tower award for 5 million dollars in 2020, the first in the traditional liquor industry, Kooksoondang received the export tower award for 7 million dollars just one year later in 2021.
