Gwangju Seo-gu Council: "The Ruling Party Must Apologize for Distorting and Making Offensive Remarks about May 18"
Members of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council recently called for an apology and the resignation of those involved in the ruling party's distortion and offensive remarks regarding the May 18 history.
The Seo-gu Council announced on the 19th that during the 3rd plenary session of the 310th extraordinary meeting held on the 17th, a resolution titled “Apology for Distortion and Offensive Remarks on May 18 History and Call for the Resignation of Kim Jae-won, Senior Supreme Council Member, and Others,” proposed by Councilor Ahn Hyeong-ju as the representative, was adopted.
Councilor Ahn Hyeong-ju stated, “Kim Jae-won, Senior Supreme Council Member of the People Power Party, mocked the citizens of Gwangju by opposing the inclusion of the May 18 spirit in the Constitution and claiming that the President’s pledge to include it was merely a means to gain votes. Furthermore, Kim Gwang-dong, Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission appointed by the President, insulted the May 18 spirit and the citizens of Gwangju by making the outrageous remark that ‘the possibility of North Korean involvement in the May 18 Democratic Movement cannot be ruled out.’”
The councilors said in the resolution, “The remarks made by the Senior Supreme Council Member of the ruling party and the Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission appointed by the President cannot be dismissed as personal opinions.”
They demanded ▲ an immediate apology from the People Power Party for the offensive remarks by the Senior Supreme Council Member and the Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission who distorted the May 18 history and mocked the citizens of Gwangju ▲ immediate implementation of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s pledge to include the May 18 spirit in the preamble of the Constitution ▲ the resignation of Senior Supreme Council Member Kim Jae-won and the dismissal of Chairman Kim Gwang-dong.
