A mother who gave birth at a university hospital in Daegu disappeared, and another woman who was not the mother appeared at the hospital claiming to be the mother of the newborn and came to find the baby.
According to Yonhap News on the 15th, on the 1st, Ms. A gave birth to a newborn by cesarean section immediately after being urgently transferred to a hospital in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, and then disappeared. At that time, Ms. B reportedly told the medical staff, "This is my child registered on the family register." However, the appearances of Ms. A and Ms. B were different, and a nursery staff member who noticed this reported it to the police.
It was investigated that Ms. A received medical treatment using Ms. B’s name and resident registration number. A hospital official explained, "When leaving the hospital with a baby after childbirth, it is mandatory to verify an ID card and a family relation certificate."
There is speculation that Ms. A concealed her whereabouts, such as leaving the hospital alone, fearing that her identity deception during the discharge process would be revealed.
The Women and Juvenile Crime Investigation Unit of the Daegu Police Agency has confirmed Ms. A’s whereabouts and plans to investigate her within a few days.
In the police investigation, Ms. B stated, "I have known Ms. A for a long time through the internet and have been in contact." She also reportedly said, "After learning about Ms. A’s pregnancy, I offered to pay the hospital bills and take the baby to raise."
Based on Ms. B’s statement, the police plan to conduct forensic analysis of mobile phones and other investigations to clarify the facts of the case, including suspicions that Ms. A acted as a surrogate mother. The police are also considering applying charges against Ms. A for receiving medical treatment using another person’s identity (violation of the National Health Insurance Act).
