Muan-gun Supports Adoption Fees for Abandoned Animals and Registration Fees for Companion Dogs
The First Step Toward Realizing Animal Welfare
Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) will support the adoption fees for abandoned animals and registration fees for companion dogs in 2023 to promote respect for animal life and the spread of a proper companion animal care culture.
According to the county on the 15th, those who adopt lost or abandoned animals and incur expenses such as veterinary diagnosis and treatment fees, vaccination fees, animal registration fees, and grooming fees within six months from the adoption date will be supported up to 60% of the total cost (with a maximum limit of 150,000 KRW) as adoption fees.
In addition, to raise interest in adoption and increase the adoption rate, the county has established a bulletin board for the abandoned animal shelter on the county website, providing more information about abandoned and companion animals, and operates it so that users can directly access the Animal Protection Management System and volunteer portal site from the board.
Furthermore, as the number of households raising companion animals continues to increase, the county supports companion dog registration fees to reduce the financial burden and prevent animal abuse or abandonment. However, to ensure smooth owner identification, support is provided only for implanted chip registration, up to 5 dogs per household, with a limit of 30,000 KRW.
The animal registration system has been mandatory nationwide since January 1, 2014, and to protect animals and prevent loss and abandonment, dogs aged two months or older raised for companionship in houses, quasi-houses, or other places can be registered at local animal registration agencies (six animal hospitals) within the jurisdiction.
A county official said, "When adopting an abandoned animal, it means gaining a new family member, so it is important to make a careful and responsible choice," and added, "To minimize the occurrence of abandoned animals, we strongly urge owners to register their companion dogs."
