Absolix Partners with US Local Educational Institutions for 'Semiconductor Workforce Training'
Georgia Piedmont Technical College Industry-Academic Cooperation
Training Technical Personnel Needed for Glass Substrate Business
Contributing to Strengthening Competitiveness of Regional Semiconductor Industry Ecosystem
SKC's semiconductor glass substrate business investor, Absolix, has partnered with a local educational institution in the United States to foster talent for the semiconductor industry.
On the 9th (local time), Absolix signed an industry-academia cooperation agreement with Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) to jointly establish an educational training program for semiconductor industry workforce development. The signing ceremony held at GPTC Newton Campus in Covington, Newton County, Georgia, was attended by key representatives from both sides, including Kim Sung-jin, Absolix Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Tabarez Holston, President of GPTC.
Based on this agreement, Absolix and GPTC plan to develop a customized industry-academia cooperative education and training curriculum focused on roles such as semiconductor quality control and defect analysis. Through this, they aim to not only cultivate the workforce needed for the semiconductor glass substrate business in the long term but also contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the overall regional semiconductor industry ecosystem.

Absolix, which is pioneering the world's first semiconductor glass substrate business, has been constructing a production plant on the site of SKC inc. in Georgia since last November. In the first phase, they are investing $240 million to complete a production plant with an annual capacity of 12,000㎡ by next year. They are also pursuing a plan to expand production capacity to 72,000㎡ annually through a second phase investment of $360 million.
The semiconductor glass substrate business also began through local industry-academia cooperation. The commercialization was achieved by combining the basic glass substrate technology from Georgia Institute of Technology with SKC’s processing technology and manufacturing know-how. With additional industry-academia cooperation with GPTC, Absolix is participating in nurturing excellent talent and establishing a foundation for stable recruitment.
Founded in 1961, GPTC is one of the largest and longest-established technical education community colleges in Georgia. It graduates more than 1,000 students annually in fields such as industrial technology and computer engineering. Tabarez Holston, President of GPTC, expressed his expectation that “the successful long-term industry-academia cooperation with global companies SKC and Absolix will contribute to regional development.”
