Changwon Municipal Art Troupe Presents Original Musical 'Angolpo Naval Battle' Performance
During Jinhae Gunhangje Festival, Exploring the Meaning of the 'Yi Sun-sin Theme'
The 1592 Battle of Angolpo in Jinhae, where the Joseon navy led by Yi Sun-sin annihilated the Japanese navy, is being artistically reinterpreted and brought to the stage.
Changwon City in Gyeongnam Province will present the musical "Battle of Angolpo," created by the Changwon Municipal Arts Troupe based on the historic battle of Angolpo in Jinhae, at 7:30 PM on the 30th and 31st at the Seongsan Art Hall Grand Theater.
The musical "Battle of Angolpo," produced to foster competitive local cultural content, was first introduced to audiences last year. Encouraged by the positive reviews from the initial performance, this year’s production promises to deliver even more moving narratives and music.
The original musical "Battle of Angolpo" reenacts the victory at the Battle of Angolpo fought off the coast of Jinhae during the Imjin War. It depicts General Yi Sun-sin’s undefeated battles overcoming the national crisis caused by the Japanese invasion through tactics and leadership, portrayed with dynamic music and spectacular scenes.
Under the overall direction and orchestral baton of Gong Gi-tae, artistic director of the Changwon Municipal Choir, this production is directed by Kim Seong-gyeong, an opera and musical director, with composers Cheon Deuk-woo and Lee Min-kyung participating.
Notably, veteran actor Lee Jae-yong, with 40 years of acting experience, will play the role of Yi Sun-sin in the performance on the 31st, drawing great anticipation. He will also hold a photo session with citizens, creating unforgettable memories, and audiences can participate in a comment event after viewing.
Additionally, the rich performance featuring live orchestral music by the Changwon Municipal Symphony Orchestra, dazzling choreography and dance by the Changwon Municipal Dance Company, and the soulful voice of Kim Soo-kyung, holder of Daegu Intangible Cultural Property No. 8 in Pansori, will be broadcast live on Changwon City Hall’s official YouTube channel.
