Gyeonggi Province has developed technology for creating virtual reality (VR) educational content using mobile phone cameras through industry-academia cooperation.

On the 6th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had developed technology to produce and learn VR educational content using mobile phone and laptop cameras through industry-academia cooperation with the research team from Korea Aerospace University.

According to the province, the research team led by Professor Baek Joong-hwan of the Department of Avionics and Information Engineering at Korea Aerospace University, conducting research at the Gyeonggi Regional Research Center (GRRC), developed technology that predicts depth information with a single camera installed on commonly used mobile phones, laptops, and webcams to recognize user movements.

Generally, to create VR content, wearable sensors are used to recognize user movements and control avatars. However, this method has drawbacks such as lower recognition accuracy for some movements and high costs.

The technology developed by Professor Baek's team predicts the user's body parts in three dimensions using only a single camera and applies artificial intelligence (AI) technology, characterized by fast real-time processing speed.

When applied to create virtual and augmented reality (VR·AR) learning content, this technology can reduce production costs by up to 80% compared to expensive depth sensors due to improved recognition performance.

It is expected that anyone can use this technology to implement various virtual characters and virtual spaces, as well as expand into various fields including educational VR content.

The Korea Aerospace University Regional Research Center plans to first apply this technology to produce VR content for dance and Taekwondo poomsae education in collaboration with a company developing storybook production solutions.

The GRRC project is an industry-academia cooperation model that supports technology development by connecting universities, research institutes, and small and medium-sized enterprises within the province, currently conducting research and development at 10 centers.
