It started in 1956 as the Korea Dog Breeders Association and was renamed the Korea Registered Dog Association (KCA) in 1975, becoming a pre-registered dog breed organization approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
In 1986, it eliminated international criticism of Korea as a country of animal abuse due to the dog meat culture, and in 1988, to ensure the successful hosting of the Seoul Olympics, it was renamed the Korea Pet Animal Protection Association (KPAPA), adding animal protection as a business purpose.
In 2001, it was renamed the Korean Canine Club (KCC), and in February 2006, the English name was changed to “Korea Kennel Federation” to align with the Korean name.
