野 "Lee Sang-min Impeachment Likely to Be Accepted"... Formation of 'Response Team'
Park Hong-geun "Expecting Fair Judgment from the Constitutional Court"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The Democratic Party of Korea emphasized that the impeachment motion against Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, which was passed, has a "greater likelihood of being accepted by the Constitutional Court." The party leadership plans to form an internal response team to actively respond to the impeachment trial.
On the 9th, after the party policy coordination meeting, floor spokesperson Oh Young-hwan said in a back briefing, "We do not think the possibility of dismissal is greater," adding, "We proceeded with the impeachment motion fully believing that the likelihood of acceptance was higher based on thorough promotion and review."
He added, "If there had been even minimal political intent or strategic calculation in the process of pushing for and passing the impeachment motion, it would not have been passed with the overwhelming support of 179 lawmakers, exceeding the number proposed by the three opposition parties."
He also emphasized that the party will respond to the impeachment trial at the party level going forward. Spokesperson Oh said, "Regarding the ongoing impeachment trial, the National Assembly is also considering ways to fulfill its role to the fullest. Within our party, we plan to create a confidential special response team to prepare and respond as much as possible to the impeachment trial."

Park Hong-geun, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said at the meeting, "The baton has been passed to the Constitutional Court," adding, "The Constitutional Court is the highest independent constitutional adjudicatory court that protects our constitution. We expect the Constitutional Court to deliver a fair and wise judgment based on the common sense of the people that the life and safety of the people are the state's foremost duty and the spirit of the constitution."
He continued, "In this prosecutorial republic, the presidential office and the ruling party are recklessly making careless remarks about the impeachment trial results as if they were appointed as Constitutional Court justices, relying on a single court," and criticized, "If that is the case, then why do the impeachment system and the Constitutional Court exist?"
Floor leader Park said, "This arrogant regime, which has lost 159 lives and has never sincerely bowed its head before the people in repentance, is blaming the National Assembly to protect a minister who failed to protect the people and is fully engaged in shameless verbal attacks. This is the essence of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration," adding, "The president should apologize, and the minister should wait for the impeachment trial and reflect."
