According to Jeju Police Agency on the 6th, this activity involves Jeju Police Agency, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and eup and myeon officials, and is scheduled to proceed for four days starting from June 2 in the Seongsan-eup area.
The main activities include deploying six police motorcycles (Saika) and five patrol cars to crack down on chronic disorderly behavior of two-wheeled vehicles during the period.
Also, for elderly people not wearing helmets on two-wheeled vehicles, helmets (about 700 units) produced with budget support from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (Traffic Policy Division) and Jeju Autonomous Police Committee will be provided while urging safe driving, and reflective stickers with high visibility will be attached (replaced) on power tillers.
Visiting senior centers with Korea Transportation Safety Authority and others, they will inform the elderly about safety rules for two-wheeled vehicles, power tillers, and pedestrians, as well as the voluntary surrender support system for elderly drivers' licenses. They will also visit district offices to collect opinions on inconvenient traffic facilities or accident-prone areas and plan to promote facility improvements in the future.
According to traffic accident statistics, as of last year, the number of deaths among the elderly aged 65 and over accounted for the highest proportion at 41.5% of total deaths, and especially increased by 22% compared to the previous year.
Among them, 17 drivers caused (perpetrators) fatal traffic accidents, and eight people died in pedestrian accidents (victims), including three jaywalkers, with four deaths (50%) occurring in eup and myeon areas.
The number of deaths involving two-wheeled vehicles increased by 62.5% (from 8 to 13), among which three elderly drivers aged 65 and over died.
Lee Sang-ryul, Chief of Jeju Police Agency, said, “To protect even a single precious life from traffic accidents, we will closely cooperate with related organizations and carefully monitor not only downtown dong areas but also eup and myeon areas.”
He added, “Please do not forget that helmets are life helmets, seat belts are life belts, and crosswalk stop lines are lifelines. We ask for voluntary compliance with traffic laws so that safe driving habits, safe walking habits, and a considerate advanced traffic culture can be established.”
