Yangcheon-gu Actively Proposes Support for Residents Actually Affected by Airport Noise
Yangcheon District Mayor Lee Gi-jae Visits Minister Won Hee-ryong of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Requests Active Government Support to Resolve Airport Noise Issues
Proposes Practical Additional Support Measures Such as Converting Cooling Facility In-Kind Support to Cash Support and Reducing Late-Night Aircraft Operations
Will Continue Proactive Support and Ongoing Discussions on Residents' Demands at the District Level
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 30th, Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon District, visited the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and expressed gratitude to Minister Won Hee-ryong for expanding the number of households compensated for airport noise damage.
He also requested the government’s active support to ensure practical compensation for residents affected by airport noise.
Mayor Lee Gi-jae requested a thorough survey of residents suffering from airport noise and the establishment of realistic compensation measures, proposing ▲expansion of noise countermeasure areas ▲increase in electricity bill support to reflect current realities ▲and reduction of late-night aircraft operation hours.
Minister Won Hee-ryong, after hearing the proposals, stated, “Regarding additional electricity bill support, we will strive to convert the in-kind support of cooling facilities into cash support so that the benefits directly reach residents who actually live there.” Regarding the request to move the current late-night operation restriction from 11 PM?6 AM to 10 PM, he said, “We will first try to induce voluntary reduction of late-night flights by applying differential landing fees.”
Last August, Mayor Lee Gi-jae held a meeting with Minister Won Hee-ryong and heads of local governments near Gimpo Airport, actively responding to the airport noise impact measurement survey, preventing the reduction of 3,000 households in the airport noise countermeasure area, and instead achieving an increase of about 455 households in the noise countermeasure area.
Additionally, Yangcheon District enacted an ordinance last year to reduce property taxes in noise countermeasure areas, and plans to continue establishing proactive and reasonable compensation plans and solutions by supporting precise hearing tests and building an airport noise monitoring system at the district level.
