Muan-gun Directly Manages Animal Shelter... Establishes Animal Welfare Team
Hiring 2 Fixed-Term Workers Dedicated to Organic and Companion Animals
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Jeonnam Muan-gun (Governor Kim San) has established an Animal Welfare Team within the Livestock Division to practice animal protection and welfare, reorganizing the organization to directly manage the stray animal shelter and handle animal welfare-related projects.
According to the county on the 17th, as the population raising companion animals continues to increase, the number of abused or abandoned animals is also rising, prompting direct management.
In particular, there is an urgent need to raise awareness and build consensus on healthy companion animal care and animal welfare, with ongoing calls to shift policies from mere animal protection to animal welfare, including health, nutrition, and safety of animals.

Accordingly, on December 1 last year, the county urgently formed an Animal Welfare TF Team and established a new temporary shelter in Yongwol-ri, Muan-eup, to directly manage the stray animal shelter, transferring 70 dogs previously housed in a consignment shelter.
Additionally, to ensure smooth operation of the stray animal shelter and safe protection of animals, two fixed-term workers responsible for rescuing, transporting, and managing stray animals were hired and have been working on-site since the 1st of this month.
With this organizational restructuring, it is expected that active and prompt handling of civil complaints regarding stray animals and abuse reports will be possible, along with expanded welfare projects such as neutering surgeries for stray cats, adoption of stray animals, and support for companion dog registration.
Furthermore, to modernize the facilities of the stray animal shelter, operate a systematic system, and provide protection management by professional personnel, the county plans to build a Stray Animal Protection Center as a balanced national project in 2024.
Heo Jae-kyung, head of the Livestock Division, said, “We will do our best to directly manage the stray animal shelter, establish a proper companion animal culture, and ensure safe protection and adoption to realize One-Welfare where both people and animals are happy.”
