141 Teams Including Soccer, Baseball, and Volleyball Attract Nearly 19,000 Participants
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 16th that it was selected as an excellent institution in Jeollanam-do’s ‘2022 Season Training Camp Hosting Performance Evaluation.’
As a result of Jeollanam-do’s evaluation of the 2021-2022 season summer and winter training camp hosting performance of 22 cities and counties, Suncheon City won the Encouragement Award and received a prize of 20 million KRW for the renovation budget of public sports facilities.
Last year, despite COVID-19, the city hosted training camps for 141 teams in four sports including soccer, baseball, and volleyball, with a total of about 19,000 participants. It also attracted about 50,000 spectators through domestic competitions such as the Dodram Cup Pro Volleyball Tournament organized by the Korea Volleyball Federation, the National Judo Competition, and international events including the 2022 Korea Open Badminton Championships and the 2022 Suncheon-Asia Mountain Bike Championship.

Suncheon City has established various sports infrastructures including seven soccer fields such as Palmaju Stadium with all-season grass fields, two baseball fields, 15 tennis courts, nine soft tennis courts, and the Palma Train Center completed last year.
Additionally, with an average winter temperature above freezing, a short travel time of about three hours from the metropolitan area, and various attractions and food options, it has optimal conditions as a winter training camp location. Every year, many people visit, enhancing its status as a first-class sports city.
Meanwhile, Suncheon City plans to hold major sports events this year including stove league games for baseball and soccer training camps in January and February, the 18th Jeonnam Senior Citizens Sports Festival in April, the 2023 Jeonnam Disabled Sports Festival in September, five events of the 104th National Sports Festival in October, the 35th Jeonnam Sports Festival, the 43rd National Disabled Sports Festival in November, and the Nam Seung-ryong Marathon. These events aim to successfully host the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo and revitalize the local economy.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon said, “This year, along with the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, we will put all our efforts into sports marketing to attract various sports events and training camps.” He added, “We ask for cooperation so that local businesses and citizens can warmly welcome visitors from outside the region with kindness and hospitality, thereby further spreading the positive effects on the local economy including lodging and restaurants.”
