Jin Air "Saved Child Passenger with In-Flight Emergency Treatment"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] A Jin Air flight attendant saved a child passenger who was in a state of airway obstruction by performing calm emergency first aid.
On the 5th, an 11-year-old child passenger traveling with their parents on Jin Air flight LJ647 from Busan to Guam faced an emergency situation when a candy got stuck in their throat onboard. At the time, flight attendant Minjeong Yang, who was performing service duties, approached the child after receiving a help request from the parents and recognized the airway obstruction symptoms caused by the candy stuck in the throat.
Minjeong Yang immediately informed all crew members of the situation and quickly brought the child out into the cabin aisle and began to pat their back. When several attempts were ineffective, Yang performed the Heimlich maneuver by applying abdominal thrusts. After the first attempt did not expel the candy, cabin chief Jueun Lee, who was nearby, performed the Heimlich maneuver again, and the child vomited and expelled the candy. The crew then tidied the surroundings and helped the child sit down and rest.
The Jin Air flight attendants responded calmly without panic during the tense moment and continued to monitor the child passenger’s condition until arrival at Guam Airport after the child’s condition improved.
Jueun Lee, the cabin chief, and Minjeong Yang, the flight attendant who performed the Heimlich maneuver, said, “Because the child was having difficulty breathing, our bodies reacted quickly to take action, and we only thought about saving the child. Learning the Heimlich maneuver during regular safety training was a great help, and it reminded us of the importance of safety training.”
Meanwhile, Jin Air conducts regular safety training such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation for flight attendants every year. Last year, the training program was strengthened by adding the Heimlich maneuver to the curriculum so that crew members can respond immediately in emergencies.
