Is There a 'Good Staircase' Lowering the Local Temperature at Seongdong-gu Office?
Delivering a clear carbon neutrality message along the section from the first-floor Chaekmaru to the third-floor auditorium in the district office
Leading carbon neutrality practice to respond to global warming by creating a ‘Carbon Footprint Staircase’ in the government building, reducing 4.5kg of carbon annually
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (District Mayor Jung Won-oh) is drawing attention by creating a ‘Good Staircase’ for the Earth inside the government building.
This is the ‘Carbon Footprint Staircase’ that conveys a message of practicing carbon neutrality by utilizing the staircase section from the first-floor Chaekmaru to the third-floor auditorium in the district office. Using the stairs once a day instead of the elevator can reduce carbon emissions by 4.5 kg annually.
The ‘Carbon Footprint Staircase’ was created considering that the third floor of the district office houses the auditorium and the public Mujigae Library, which are frequently used by residents, to raise awareness about climate change and carbon neutrality among residents.
On the staircase section, carbon reduction messages are conveyed through attached stair bands with phrases such as ▲If you raise your body temperature, the Earth's temperature goes down ▲Our healthy steps on the stairs become hope for someone ▲Small daily practices come together to save the Earth.
Additionally, carbon neutrality promotional stickers with messages like ▲Earth, don’t be sick! Let’s protect the Earth ▲Planting trees with the Earth ▲Five major action rules for practicing carbon neutrality are attached to the walls so that residents can naturally read the phrases while going up and down the stairs.
Seongdong-gu has conducted the Seongdong Environmental Academy three times in total to implement 2050 carbon neutrality. Also, in December last year, the district held its first environmental event, ‘The Only Earth,’ providing an opportunity for residents to think about practicing carbon neutrality in daily life, which received great response from the community.
