Planting Street Trees to Improve Urban Environment and Reduce Fine Dust
[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it will promote urban forest creation projects, including expanding green spaces around living areas, to respond to climate change and improve the quality of life for residents.
The county stated that it will invest 1.5 billion KRW in six projects including urban forests in 2023 to environmentally respond to climate change issues such as fine dust and heat island effects and to improve residents' living environments.
The projects to be promoted this time include: ▷Climate Response Urban Forest 1 billion KRW ▷Green Pocket Forest 50 million KRW ▷Traditional Village Forest 100 million KRW ▷School Forest 60 million KRW ▷New Street Trees 150 million KRW ▷Premium Street Forest Path 150 million KRW.
A 1-hectare climate response urban forest will be created near sources of fine dust such as national highways and vacant urban areas to reduce fine dust inflow into living areas.
In addition, various types of urban forests and street trees will be promoted within living areas, including green pocket forests created on small urban vacant lots, school forests used as green education spaces for students, and traditional village forests restoring damaged village forests.
An official from the county said, “By creating urban forests throughout living areas, we will not only mitigate urban heat island effects and reduce fine dust but also provide small healing spaces in residents' daily lives. We plan to increase various types of urban forests so that all residents can easily access the forests.”
