[New Year's Address] Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok: "We Will Be a Support and Windbreak Against Pressure Undermining Fairness"
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok emphasized, "We will firmly respond to unjust attacks and pressures that undermine the fairness of prosecutorial investigations and become a pillar and shield that protects the courage and conviction of the prosecution members."
In his New Year's address, Prosecutor General Lee stated on the 31st, "For the prosecution to gain the trust of the people, fairness and political neutrality are above all important," adding, "The public expects the prosecution to investigate impartially and enforce the law fairly and without bias."
He continued, "As I have emphasized several times, there can be no exceptions, sanctuaries, or privileges in law enforcement," and urged, "I hope all prosecutorial work will be handled solely based on evidence and legal principles with the utmost effort."
Prosecutor General Lee also urged that the prosecution keep in mind that errors may occur in their work and listen to the voices of the people. He said, "We must listen to the people's voices and not hesitate to correct mistakes if there are any," and added, "I hope you will once again reflect on the teaching of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong that 'Refraining repeatedly is the fundamental way to govern punishment.'"
Furthermore, Prosecutor General Lee called on members to actively respond to ▲ crimes infringing on people's livelihood ▲ digital sex crimes, sexual violence, and stalking crimes ▲ drug crimes ▲ serious industrial accidents ▲ unfair practices ▲ and national fiscal corruption.
He also urged maintaining the proper attitude as public officials. He emphasized, "As in recent years, the conditions inside and outside the prosecution will not be easy this year either," and said, "My hands must be clean to punish the wrongdoings of others, and if I am not ashamed upon self-reflection, I will not fear even if a thousand troops come."
Prosecutor General Lee evaluated that this year, the prosecution is laying the foundation to make a leap forward as a ‘prosecution serving the people’ and that a ‘working spirit’ is newly permeating.
He said, "We are people who do the ‘right thing’ in the ‘right way’ and ‘rightfully,’" adding, "Regarding ‘the work of the prosecution,’ we must calmly and courageously carry out what we ‘must do’ without being swept away by false claims or groundless criticism beyond reasonable and healthy criticism."
