"Effort Needed to Maintain Marriage" Empathy and Support Continue
Michelle Obama (58), wife of former U.S. President Barack Obama, revealed that "the most severe conflicts with my husband occurred during the 10 years I was raising our two daughters after their birth."
On the 29th (local time), according to the British daily newspapers The Guardian and The Independent, Mrs. Obama made this statement in an interview with REVOLT TV, which was released on the 14th.
Mrs. Obama said, "There was a time during the past 10 years when I could not stand my husband's presence, and that was when my two daughters were young."
The former President Barack Obama and his wife, who married in 1992, have two daughters: eldest Malia (24) and younger Natasha (21).
President Obama was elected as the first Black president in U.S. history in 2008, when the daughters were 10 and 7 years old, respectively.
Mrs. Obama said that after their daughters were born, "For 10 years, while trying to build my career and worrying about various issues related to the children such as school, I felt that the marriage was not fair."
She explained that while former President Obama was actively building his political career at the time, the burden of child-rearing was entirely on her.
She said, "The burden of marriage is never split 50-50," adding, "There are times when I bear 70 and he bears 30."
However, Mrs. Obama added, "To maintain a good marriage, even when you have conflicts with your partner, you need to know that person well and like them as they are."
She explained, "Even when you are angry with your partner, it is important to think, 'I am not satisfied with our relationship right now, but I still respect you,' or 'I may not agree with your opinion, but you are still a kind and wise person.'
She added, "Emotions inevitably change over time, and from then on, couples must work to maintain their relationship."
The Independent reported that the public is expressing empathy with Mrs. Obama's interview.
