A 5-year-old girl was rescued along with her two younger siblings after 55 hours, having saved them following a car accident in which their parents died in a suburb of Western Australia.
On the 28th (local time), according to CNN and others, the Western Australia Police announced that on the 26th, they found the family’s Land Rover Discovery vehicle in Kondinin, about 280 km east of Perth. The vehicle was confirmed to have rolled off the road, but it is unclear what caused the crash. The parents, Jake Day (28) and Cindy Bradock (25), were found dead inside the car, while their children?a 5-year-old girl and 1-year-old and 2-year-old toddlers?were rescued.
They had left home on Christmas Eve to attend a party but were involved in the accident. A gas station employee confirmed that the family briefly stopped there after 1 a.m. on Christmas morning. Employee Nathan O’Donnell said, “They looked very tired” and purchased drinks and snacks needed for a long drive. Relatives were waiting for the family but could not contact them, and after they did not show up at the party, they reported them missing to the police.
The children found at the scene were trapped in the wreckage for about 55 hours, enduring heat above 30 degrees Celsius. Notably, the eldest sister, the 5-year-old girl, unbuckled the child safety belts of her younger brothers, which likely prevented a worse situation. Their relative Reed said, “She may not realize it for years, but if she hadn’t unbuckled the belts, the younger siblings wouldn’t be here with us now.”
The children’s health deteriorated due to dehydration after enduring the heat above 30 degrees Celsius for a long time. They were transferred to Perth Children’s Hospital for treatment and are currently receiving care. Relatives said that although the children were injured in the accident, their lives are not in danger, and they are expected to be discharged within a few days.
