Busan Port Authority announced on the 29th that the infrastructure construction of the North Port Phase 1 Redevelopment will be completed on the 30th, and preparations will begin for road opening and park opening.
The North Port Phase 1 Redevelopment started in 2008 to provide the North Port, which became idle after the opening of the Busan New Port in 2006, as a waterfront space for the public.
The redevelopment is Korea's first large-scale harbor redevelopment project, investing about 2.8 trillion KRW in a total area of 1.55 million square meters, including public facilities such as roads and parks and the creation of a 1.02 million square meter site.
The main targets of this completion are all internal roads of the redevelopment project area, which are 3.1 km long, and 180,000 square meters (about 50,000 pyeong) of the total 197,000 square meters of parks.
The remaining 17,000 square meters of parks near the former Sumir Park and the Opera House construction site are scheduled to be completed in 2024.
After the completion inspection of roads and parks, they will be transferred to local governments after joint inspections by related agencies and follow-up measures in the first half of next year.
With the completion of roads within the redevelopment area, congestion on Chungjang-daero is expected to be alleviated. Currently, traffic congestion is severe during commuting hours on this section due to the ongoing underpass construction on Chungjang-daero southeast of Busan Station.
BPA has completed preparations for opening the road so that vehicles using this section can detour through the internal roads of the North Port Phase 1 Redevelopment project area. In consultation with Busan City and related agencies, it plans to allow general vehicles to use it in the first half of next year.
The underpass is a project promoted to disperse the traffic volume expected to be caused by the North Port Phase 1 Redevelopment and is scheduled to be completed in 2024.
The park, partially opened early in May this year, had usage restrictions due to remaining construction, but with most of the park now completed, the usable space has greatly expanded.
The park is arranged so that the entire area along the curved scenic waterway faces the sea, allowing visitors to enjoy the blue sea and the greenery of the park while walking.
Also, located in the heart of downtown Busan with good accessibility, many citizens and tourists can relax and enjoy the sea.
BPA expressed hope that the completion of this major infrastructure will promote the construction of upper buildings by private developers, activate the project area, and serve as an opportunity to revitalize the old downtown through regional economic activation and job creation.
