In the End, JCS Bowed Their Heads: "Apologies for the Failure to Shoot Down the Drone"
"Insufficient Preparedness... Early Establishment of Drone Unit"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] The military authorities apologized for failing to shoot down North Korean drones that violated our airspace and announced plans to strengthen response capabilities. Along with President Yoon Suk-yeol's directive to 'establish a drone unit early,' they plan to aggressively deploy strike assets, including acquiring stealth drones.
Kang Shin-chul, Chief of Operations at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated at a briefing held on the 27th at the Ministry of National Defense in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, "Yesterday, five enemy drones intruded into the airspace of the Republic of Korea, and although our military detected and tracked them, we regret that we were unable to shoot them down."

He continued, "Enemy attack drones that pose a real threat to us can be countered with our detection and strike assets, but small reconnaissance drones, which are less than 3 meters in size, have limitations against our current detection and strike capabilities," adding, "As a result, the military's preparedness was insufficient, causing great concern to the public, for which we apologize."
Chief Kang explained, "The military will thoroughly inspect the operation of detection and strike assets at each unit level to prepare for provocations by enemy drones, actively operating detection assets to detect drones from the initial stage, and aggressively deploying strike assets," and added, "To facilitate identification and minimize civilian harm, we will effectively integrate forces capable of shooting down drones without causing civilian damage, and regularly implement this through integrated joint air defense exercises at the Joint Chiefs of Staff level."
The Joint Chiefs plan to establish a 'drone unit' with various capabilities early to monitor and conduct reconnaissance of key enemy military facilities as part of strengthening their forces. Additionally, by acquiring and integrating physical and non-physical strike assets and stealth drones, they intend to enhance operational capabilities such as reconnaissance.
Chief Kang also emphasized, "We will promptly acquire essential assets capable of non-physically jamming signals and striking enemy drones with lasers, and shorten the deployment timeline of equipment currently being developed to the greatest extent possible."
He further stated, "In the past, our military could not even detect or identify enemy drone provocations, but this time we detected and tracked enemy drones. However, it is regrettable that we could not shoot down the enemy drones identified visually in a timely and efficient manner, considering public safety."

Earlier, at around 10:25 a.m. the previous day, five North Korean drones measuring about 2 meters in wingspan intruded into South Korean airspace for the first time in five years. Notably, the first detected drone reportedly flew directly into the Eunpyeong District of Seoul, raising the possibility that it flew near Yongsan, where the presidential office is located. The military responded with fighter jets and attack helicopters but failed to shoot them down. Instead, they deployed manned and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft north of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), took appropriate measures corresponding to the airspace violation, and conducted reconnaissance and operational activities, including photographing key North Korean military facilities.
