He was recognized for his distinguished service in conducting operations to suppress North Korean guerrillas in the Odaesan~Seoraksan area, and was selected as a recipient of the Military Merit Medal.
The Military Merit Medal was delivered to Mr. Jo Yong-dal, son of the late Jo Chan-hyo, through the "Korean War Military Merit Medal Recovery Project," which the Army Headquarters has been promoting from July 2019 to 2027 based on the Act on Awarding Military Merit Medals for the Korean War.
The Hwarang Military Merit Medal is the fourth highest military decoration in the Republic of Korea. It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding military merit by participating in combat during wartime or equivalent emergencies, or by performing combat-related duties such as responding to enemy attacks in border areas.
