Jangseong-gun Establishes 'National Institute of Cerebrovascular Research'... Secures 2.5 Billion Won in Government Funding

[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 26th that it has secured 2.5 billion KRW in government budget for the establishment of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Research Institute.

On the 23rd, the 2023 government budget approved at the National Assembly plenary session finally reflected 330 million KRW for the feasibility study research service for the construction of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Research Institute and 2.1 billion KRW for basic survey design costs.

The project to establish the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Research Institute is currently undergoing a feasibility re-investigation after the project scale expanded from 49 billion KRW to 109.4 billion KRW based on a service conducted independently by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in 2021.

In addition, Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency are actively responding by forming a dedicated team to ensure the smooth establishment of the research institute.

According to statistics from 2021, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases rank as the second leading cause of death in Korea after cancer, and due to westernized eating habits, the age of onset is decreasing, with mortality rates steadily increasing, making government-level research on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases urgent.

The county has been steadily working to promote the early establishment of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Research Institute.

Last month, County Governor Kim Han-jong met with local lawmaker Lee Gae-ho, officials from Jeollanam-do and Jangseong-gun, as well as representatives from KDI (Korea Development Institute) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, delivering a petition signed by residents urging the establishment of the research institute and requesting the early approval of the feasibility re-investigation and reflection of government budget.

In October, over two days, meetings were held with key lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties to propose the prompt progress of the feasibility re-investigation and support for next year’s project budget.

The Jangseong County Council also united efforts by adopting a resolution urging the swift establishment of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Research Institute.

Governor Kim Han-jong stated, “We will devote ourselves to passing the feasibility re-investigation so that the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Research Institute, a long-cherished project of Jangseong residents and Jeollanam-do citizens, can be established in Jangseong as soon as possible.”
