Personal Record ‘448.3 Billion KRW’, 249 High-Amount and Habitual Tax Delinquents Including Customs Duties Disclosed
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korea Customs Service has disclosed the list of high-value and habitual tax delinquents related to customs duties.
According to the Korea Customs Service on the 25th, a total of 249 individuals were named on the list of high-value and habitual delinquents.
Among them, 176 were individuals and 73 were corporations, with the total amount of unpaid taxes estimated at 1.07 trillion KRW.
Notably, the highest unpaid amount among individuals this year was 448.3 billion KRW, which is more than 13 times the highest corporate unpaid amount of 32.8 billion KRW.
By unpaid amount brackets, 100 people who owed between 500 million KRW and 1 billion KRW accounted for 40% of the total.
Following that, 80 people (32%) owed between 1 billion KRW and 5 billion KRW, 51 people (21%) owed between 200 million KRW and 500 million KRW, 11 people (4%) owed over 10 billion KRW, and 7 people (3%) owed between 5 billion KRW and 10 billion KRW.
The combined unpaid amount of those owing over 10 billion KRW was 718.4 billion KRW, accounting for 72% of the total unpaid amount.
The disclosure of the delinquent list has been conducted since 2007 to encourage voluntary payment by high-value and habitual delinquents and to promote public reporting of hidden assets, thereby enhancing the collection of unpaid taxes.
The disclosure targets are “delinquents who have unpaid customs duties and domestic taxes of 200 million KRW or more, with the delinquency occurring more than one year ago.”
Earlier, in April, the Korea Customs Service gave prior notice to 275 high-value and habitual delinquents about the upcoming disclosure and provided a six-month opportunity to explain their cases, encouraging voluntary payment.
Additionally, after deliberation by the Customs Information Committee this month, 26 individuals who either reduced their unpaid amount below 200 million KRW through sincere payment or are currently appealing were excluded from the disclosure list, finalizing 249 individuals as the disclosure targets.
Yoon Dong-joo, Director of the Tax Base Review Division at the Korea Customs Service, stated, “The Korea Customs Service is enhancing the effectiveness of collecting high-value and habitual unpaid taxes through various administrative sanctions, strengthening the tracking of hidden assets of delinquents, operating a reward system for reporting, and collaborating with related agencies. We will continue to strictly respond to delinquents who deliberately evade taxes and pursue hidden assets to the end.”
