Yeosu-si Holds Second 'Artifact Donation Ceremony' of the Year
Received 225 Treasures This Year Including 'Yeosu Tarubi Rubbings'
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeollanam-do Yeosu City (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that on the 20th, a 'Relic Donation Ceremony' linked to securing exhibition relics for the Yeosu City Museum was held in the mayor's office.
This donation ceremony was the second following the relic donation ceremony held in September for the Yeosu Cultural Center collection, organized to express gratitude to those who donated valuable personal collections to Yeosu City throughout the year.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong presented plaques of appreciation to four donors, including the second son of the late Namjae Song Jeon-seok, who attended the ceremony, and conveyed thanks on behalf of the citizens.
The materials donated to Yeosu City this year include a total of 225 items such as the late Namjae Song Jeon-seok’s ‘Calligraphy Works,’ ‘Wall of Prayer’ (donated by Lee In-hye) themed on the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, ‘Finger Gun’ (donated by Park Jeong-myeong), ‘Yeosu Progressing Photo Album’ (donated by Lee Hee-seung), and the treasure ‘Yeosu Tarubi Rubbing’ (donated by Kim Dong-il).
In particular, the treasure-designated ‘Yeosu Tarubi’ is a monument erected in 1603 by the soldiers of the Jeolla Left Naval Command to commemorate the virtue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin after his passing, and it is located at Goso-dae along with the treasure ‘Yeosu Tongje Yi Gong Naval Battle Monument.’
Meanwhile, the Yeosu City Museum, which is being constructed in the area of Isunsin Park in Ungcheon-dong, is scheduled to open in 2024, with construction starting early next year.
According to the city, since September 2019, a relic donation campaign has been underway, securing over 9,200 relics including Oh Hoeng-muk’s ‘Yeosu Chongswaerok (麗水叢?錄) Manuscript,’ which was produced earlier than the Jangseogak collection, the Jeolla Left Naval Command’s naval training manual ‘Sujohol (水操忽),’ as well as Yeosu intangible cultural heritage videos and oral materials.
Individuals and organizations possessing materials related to Yeosu’s archaeology, history, art, folklore, modern and contemporary history, schools, and industrial complexes are all welcome to participate in the relic donation campaign.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong said, “I deeply thank the donors who have donated precious relics to widely promote our region’s proud history and culture. The donated relics will be well exhibited at the upcoming Yeosu City Museum to share their value with many people. We ask for the citizens’ great interest and participation in the construction of the Yeosu City Museum.”
