The Excavation Site of ‘Nambukdaero’ Leading to the Silla Royal Palace to Be Opened to the Public
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The Cultural Heritage Administration will hold an on-site briefing session to publicly share the excavation results of the Balcheon area within the Eastern Historic Site Zone located north of Wolseong in Gyeongju. The event will be held twice on the 23rd, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., in collaboration with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gyeongju City.
Balcheon refers to the stream flowing from north of Wolseong, passing through Gyelim, and flowing into Namcheon in the "Gyeongju Donggung and Wolji" area. It is known as the place where Queen Alyeong, the consort of Park Hyeokgeose, the founder of Silla, experienced an episode recorded in the "Samguk Yusa."
The excavation of the Balcheon area has been ongoing since 2019 as part of the restoration and maintenance project of the core relics of the Silla royal capital. Efforts have focused on discovering the north-south boulevard starting from the Balcheon stone bridge site, proving the actual structure of the Silla royal capital city framework connected to the palace (Wolseong) at that time. Last year, the ancient waterway of Balcheon, presumed to have been constructed during the reign of King Munmu of Silla, and the Balcheon stone bridge site (the location of a stone bridge) were confirmed.
