DL E&C Completes World's Largest Port Reclamation Project, 1.5 Times the Size of Yeouido
Completion of Singapore Tuas Terminal Phase 1 Construction
Reducing Material Usage and Accelerating Schedule with Eco-Friendly Methods and New Technologies
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] DL E&C announced on the 21st that it has completed the first phase of the offshore reclamation work for the Tuas Terminal in Singapore.
Singapore is undertaking the 'Tuas Terminal' project to create the world's largest port. Once all four phases of the project are completed by 2040, it is expected to become a mega new port capable of handling an annual cargo volume of 65 million TEU (TEU: one 20-foot container). The Singapore government plans to relocate existing port facilities and functions to Tuas Port and introduce various next-generation port technologies, including unmanned automated operation systems, to establish a world-class smart mega port.
DL E&C signed the contract for this project with the Singapore Port Authority in April 2015. The total contract amount is approximately 1.98 trillion KRW, awarded jointly with the Belgian dredging specialist company Dredging International. DL E&C's share is about 720 billion KRW. DL E&C was responsible for the construction of quay facilities, including ground improvement of the reclamation site and the fabrication and installation of caissons for the port quay walls.
From the bidding stage, DL E&C received high praise from the client for its eco-friendly design that minimizes the use of riprap and sand. To reduce sand usage, dredged soil generated during seabed dredging was maximally utilized for reclamation. This saved approximately 6.4 million cubic meters of sand compared to conventional reclamation methods. Additionally, instead of the typical scour protection design that places large riprap on the seabed, an innovative method was applied that replaces riprap with concrete structures.

Furthermore, DL E&C prepared a caisson fabrication site near the project area and sequentially produced and installed a total of 221 caissons. Caissons are concrete structures fabricated to establish the foundation for reclamation work. Each caisson is 28 meters high and weighs about 15,000 tons, roughly equivalent to a 12-story apartment building. State-of-the-art robotic equipment was also used in the caisson fabrication process.
