Pohang's New Landmark Reflecting Ilwol Spirit: 'Ilwol Culture Park Completion Ceremony' Held

View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City has established the 'Ilwol Cultural Park' in the Segye-ri area of Ocheon-eup, the hometown of Yeonorang and Seonyeo, who are said to have inherited the spirit of the sun and moon, and held a completion ceremony on the 19th.
The event was attended by Pohang Mayor Kangdeok Lee, Pohang City Council Chairman Ingyu Baek, National Assembly member Byungwook Kim, and others, celebrating the completion of Ocheon Ilwol Cultural Park as a local cultural park and tourist resource.
Ilwol Cultural Park is planned by Pohang City to create a local cultural park in the Segye-ri area of Ocheon-eup, near Ilwolji within the 1st Marine Division, which is said to be the background of the 'Yeonorang Seonyeo' legend, and to utilize it as a tourist resource to attract visitors.
To this end, the area was re-designated as a park in the 2013 urban management plan, and after starting land compensation in 2017, the park construction officially began in September 2019. The content project was completed at the end of June this year, marking the completion of Ilwol Cultural Park.
This project is part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's initiative to emphasize cultural excellence through the establishment of tourism infrastructure in three major cultural zones. A total of 12.5 billion KRW, including national and provincial funds, was invested. Covering an area of 23,330㎡ (approximately 7,070 pyeong), the park features the Yeonorang Seonyeo statue, a memorial altar embodying the spirit of the sun and moon, the Ilwol Cultural Memorial Hall, Ilwolji, Bronze Age artifacts, standing stones, petroglyphs, ancient tombs, an administrative office, and parking facilities, expected to attract diverse tourists as a new tourist attraction in Pohang.
The completion ceremony proceeded with a congratulatory performance by the Kim Dong-eun Dance Troupe, followed by a project progress report, presentation of plaques of appreciation by Mayor Kangdeok Lee (to one construction company representative and two advisory committee members), congratulatory speeches by key guests, commemorative photo sessions and performances, and facility tours.

Mayor Kangdeok Lee stated, “We will do our best to establish Ilwol Cultural Park, a cultural park imbued with historical heritage, as a new tourist resource in Pohang by widely promoting it to citizens and tourists in connection with the Yeonorang Seonyeo Theme Park in Donghae-myeon and the Exile Culture Experience Village in Janggi-myeon.”
