52% of Americans Say "Economy Will Get Worse Next Year"
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] More than half of Americans view the economy pessimistically for next year. However, the outlook on the economy varied somewhat depending on political party affiliation, with pessimism particularly pronounced among Republican supporters.
According to a poll released on the 16th (local time) by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), 52% of respondents answered that they think "the US economy will get worse" next year when asked, "How do you think the US economy will perform next year?" Only 25% responded that it would "get better." 18% said it would be "about the same as this year."
The survey was conducted from the 3rd to the 7th among 1,500 registered voters nationwide in the US, with a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points.
The outlook differed by political party affiliation. While 83% of Republican supporters expected the economy to worsen next year, only 22% of Democratic supporters said the economy would get worse. John Anzalone, a Democratic pollster who conducted the survey, said, "Americans' economic assessments are divided along partisan lines," adding, "If there had been a Republican president, the opposite result might have emerged."
By age group, a more pessimistic view was confirmed among younger voters. Six out of ten respondents aged 18 to 34 predicted the economy would worsen next year. In contrast, only 42% of those aged 65 and older said the economy would deteriorate.
Additionally, when asked "How do you evaluate the strength of the US economy?" negative evaluations (67%) were more than twice as many as positive evaluations (32%). In response to the question "Do you think the US economy is heading in the right direction?" 65% answered that it is "heading in the wrong direction."
