Muan-gun Selected for Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'Island Area Specialization Project'
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, has been finally selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's island region specialization project, securing a project budget of 5 billion KRW including national funds.
This specialization project targets islands (188 locations) within special situation areas for development. Muan-gun applied for the project in May this year targeting Tando Island, and among 15 locations nationwide, Muan-gun and Yeosu-si in Jeollanam-do were finally selected.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety's island region specialization project supports the creation of sustainable island villages by having island residents form organizations, establish village development plans utilizing various local resources, and promote income-generating projects and village revitalization activities.
The Tando specialization project is structured in four phases: Phase 1 involves discovering village resources and establishing a village plan; Phase 2 carries out one or two unit projects; Phase 3 advances the village plan and expands unit projects; and Phase 4 further enhances the projects from Phase 3.
Additionally, for more effective and professional management of the project, the Korea Island Promotion Agency has signed an agreement with Muan-gun to promote resident capacity building, performance management, and operation of the PM team (field management team).
A county official stated, "Through this project, we aim to develop Tando, the only inhabited island in Muan, into a livable and sustainable island."
