Embezzled About 240 Million Won from a Housekeeper Over Nearly 2 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A man in his 50s who embezzled a large sum of money from a housekeeper was sentenced to prison. He was found to have committed the crime by deceiving others into believing he was an heiress of a chaebol family or a hidden child of a former president.
According to Yonhap News on the 11th, the Cheongju District Court Criminal Division 4 (Presiding Judge Nam Jun-woo) sentenced Mr. A (51), who was tried on charges of fraud, to 10 months in prison. He was also ordered to pay compensation of approximately 240 million won to the victim.
Mr. A is accused of embezzling about 240 million won over approximately two years from December 2017 to 2019 from Ms. B, who worked as a housekeeper at his home, under the pretext of investment funds. During this process, he impersonated an illegitimate child of a former president or an heiress of a chaebol family. He deceived Ms. B by pretending to have enormous wealth.
At the time, Mr. A persuaded Ms. B that investing in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics fund would yield large profits and embezzled her wages dozens of times. He also deceived Ms. B into investing by promising to sell shares of a leading domestic company at 10,000 won per share.

Investigations revealed that Mr. A had not actually invested in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics fund. Furthermore, he did not have the financial means to pay any profits to Ms. B. The court stated the sentencing rationale, saying, "Considering that he has been punished multiple times for similar crimes and has not compensated the victim at all, the nature of the crime is not good."
