Jeju Fire Station Implements Measures to Eradicate Verbal Abuse and Assault Against Paramedics
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Jeju Fire Station (Chief Go Jae-woo) announced on the 25th that it recently implemented measures to eradicate verbal abuse and assault against 119 paramedics targeting about 94 paramedics belonging to Jeju Fire Station.
As assaults on paramedics by intoxicated individuals have continued to occur in Jeju Province recently, it is expected to lead to effective responses and measures.
There have been 31 cases of paramedic assaults in Jeju Province over the past five years (2018-2022), with only 2 arrests, and 30 cases were identified as related to alcohol consumption.
Jeju Fire Station supports paramedics by installing automatic alarm and reporting devices for assault damage inside ambulances, providing wearable cameras, operating special judicial police officers, and running on-site command teams (safety inspectors) to prevent assault damage to paramedics.
Chief Go Jae-woo operated this training online and non-face-to-face for the convenience of paramedics and conducted special training based on actual cases to address possible situations.
According to Article 50 of the Fire Services Act, anyone who assaults or threatens dispatched firefighters, thereby obstructing fire suppression, rescue, or emergency activities, shall be punished by imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 50 million won.
