Gwanak-gu Provides Support for Treatment Costs and Consolation Money to Prevent Trauma from Crime Victimization
[Seoul District News] Gwanak-gu Supports Victims in Psychologically and Economically Vulnerable States Due to Crime
& Provides Treatment Costs, Consolation Money, Moving Expenses, etc. to Help Return to Stable Daily Life
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is providing support such as counseling and treatment fees, consolation money, moving expenses, and funeral costs to crime victims who are in psychologically and economically vulnerable states due to crime.
Although there has been a growing call for support for crime victims recently, the current 'Crime Victim Protection Act' excludes cases where the perpetrator and victim are relatives such as spouses or direct blood relatives, and mainly supports victims of the 'five major violent crimes' such as robbery or murder, thus imposing certain limitations.
In response, the district established the 'Ordinance on Support for Crime Victims in Gwanak-gu, Seoul' in 2017, the first of its kind in Seoul, to support residents who fall into the blind spots of crime victim support, actively helping victims to enjoy a stable daily life without trauma.
The recipients supported by the district are residents registered in Gwanak-gu who have suffered various crimes such as domestic violence, stalking, and voice phishing fraud, and are finally selected by the 'Gwanak-gu Crime Victim Support Deliberation Committee' upon recommendation by the Gwanak Police Station chief.
This year alone, the district has supported 27 people with a total of 40 million won, and from 2018 to 2022, a total of 100 people have received 145 million won in support.
Additionally, the district annually grants 40 million won to the Korea Crime Victim Support Central Center, a non-profit organization supporting victims of violent crimes, actively striving to assist crime victims in distress.
