Kim Tae-jin, Gwangju Seo-gu Council Member, Leads Proposal for 'Basic Ordinance on Climate Crisis Response'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Kim Tae-jin, a member of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council (Progressive Party), announced on the 23rd that the 'Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Basic Ordinance on Climate Crisis Response,' which he proposed as the main sponsor, was passed at the plenary session.
The ordinance includes ▲basic principles ▲responsibilities of the district mayor and residents ▲greenhouse gas reduction targets and plans ▲Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee ▲greenhouse gas reduction and adaptation measures ▲implementation and expansion of a carbon-neutral community, among other contents.
Councilor Kim explained the purpose of the enactment, stating, "In 2018, Gwangju's greenhouse gas emissions increased by 4.51% compared to the previous year, with transportation (27.55%), industry (22.81%), commercial and public sectors (21.32%), and households (20.10%) in order, which is higher than the national average of 2.51%."
He added, "Since emissions within the authority directly managed by local governments, such as road transportation and new building construction, are significant, the role of local governments is important," and argued, "The enacted ordinance should serve as an opportunity for a substantial systemic transition related to the climate crisis."
Meanwhile, Councilor Kim had previously expressed his opinions on the enactment of the ordinance through policy suggestions on 'Climate Crisis Response and Realization of Carbon Neutrality' during the 305th extraordinary session on August 1.
