Suncheon City Completes Construction of Namhaean Fermented Food Industry Support Center
Standardizing Fermentation Raw Materials and Fostering Related Industries to Develop Fermentation into a Convergent Industry
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) held a completion ceremony for the South Coast Fermented Food Industry Support Center on the 18th.
About 100 people attended the completion ceremony, including local residents, Suncheon Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu, Jeollanam-do Council Chairman Seo Dong-wook, and Suncheon City Council Chairman Jeong Byeong-hoe.
The South Coast Fermented Food Industry Support Center was selected in the 2019 Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs contest and was built in Pyeongjung-ri, Seungju-eup, with a total floor area of 2,264㎡. Two buildings, a production building and a research and business support building, were constructed with a total project cost of 11.3 billion KRW.
Starting from the completion ceremony, the city plans to aggressively promote the expansion of fermentation into a convergence industry by developing materials using the city's specialty resources, standardizing fermentation raw materials, and fostering related industries.
As an immediate task, by 2023, the city plans to develop the fermentation composite starter culture (SCOBY), the core technology for kombucha production, to replace imported starter cultures and secure a dominant position through profit generation from starter culture distribution.
Suncheon Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu said, “We expect the South Coast Fermented Food Industry Support Center to serve as a channel for policy development and fostering of the fermented food industry, as well as for the mutual development of agriculture and the food industry.” He added, “We will continue to make active efforts so that the fermented food industry can contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural and food industry.”
