This measure was prepared for the safety of Changwon citizens following the frequent occurrence of winter traditional market fires, such as the fire at Daegu Agricultural Wholesale Market on the 25th of last month.
According to the Changwon Fire Department, there have been 168 traditional market fires nationwide in the past three years, with 24 occurring in the Changwon area.
Accordingly, the Fire Department will conduct focused inspections of firefighting facilities such as sprinklers at 62 traditional markets in Changwon City and secure fire truck access routes and evacuation routes through firefighting drills.
They will also identify emergency fire extinguishing devices installed in traditional markets and provide training on their use to related personnel to strengthen fire safety measures in traditional markets.
The emergency fire extinguishing devices installed in traditional markets are facilities that citizens can use to suppress fires during the golden time at the early stage of a fire. These include fire hydrants, fire hoses, and nozzles.
The Fire Department plans to do its best to eliminate blind spots by also checking whether additional installations are needed.

Kim Yong-jin, head of the Fire Department, said, “Traditional markets have a structure where each store is attached closely, so when a fire occurs, it is highly likely to develop into a large-scale fire that is uncontrollable.” He added, “We will do our best to create a safe Changwon City through thorough safety inspections and preparations for vulnerable targets.”
