Ulsan City Selects Four 'Masters' This Year in Shipbuilding, Welding, Casting, and Electrical Trades
Benefits Including Awarding Master Certificates and Providing 10 Million Won in Technology Incentives
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Ulsan City has selected a total of four individuals as ‘Ulsan Metropolitan City Masters’ this year: Shipbuilding Lee Young-shin (Hyundai Heavy Industries), Welding Heo Won-seok (Hyundai Mipo Dockyard), Casting Kim Jin-guk (Hyundai Heavy Industries), and Electrical Baek Jong-seon (Hyundai Electric).
This year’s Ulsan City Masters were chosen through document and interview evaluations and on-site inspections conducted by 13 judges, including masters of Korea, who reviewed 19 applicants submitted through a public announcement in September. The final selection was made at the judging committee meeting held on the 11th.
The newly selected shipbuilding master Lee Young-shin joined Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2005 and won a gold medal at the 39th International Skills Olympics held in 2007.
He is also actively involved in various activities such as serving as a test and judging committee member for national technical qualification exams and participating in industrial field mentoring projects to advance skilled technology and nurture juniors.
Welding master Heo Won-seok joined Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 2001 and acquired the welding technician qualification through continuous self-development based on 21 years of field experience.
He is especially active in mentoring juniors by participating as a judge in skills competitions, national technical qualification exams, and industrial field mentoring.
Casting master Kim Jin-guk joined Hyundai Heavy Industries in 1986 and has worked in the casting field for 35 years. He holds a casting technician qualification and serves as a core technology transmitter and production technology transmitter within the company to pass on skilled techniques.
Electrical master Baek Jong-seon joined Hyundai Electric in 1984 and has been engaged in power transformer production testing for 38 years. Through steady self-development, he obtained the electrical technician qualification.
He works as a core technology transmitter within the company and actively participates in high school mentoring activities to nurture skilled technicians.
The selected Ulsan Metropolitan City Masters will receive a master certificate and a technology encouragement fund of 10 million KRW (2 million KRW annually for 5 years), and will be inducted into the ‘Ulsan Metropolitan City Masters Hall of Fame’ this December.
A city official stated, “The skilled technicians selected this year are valuable talents who have greatly contributed to improving regional skilled technology and driving industrial development with their long-honed skills and know-how. The city will actively support nurturing prospective skilled technicians based on the excellent skills and field experience of these masters to strengthen Ulsan as a technology city.”
The Ulsan Metropolitan City Master system is a skilled technology promotion project started in 2015 to raise social awareness of regional skilled technology and improve the status of skilled technicians.
