View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] North Korea has issued a stamp commemorating the intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that passed over the Japanese archipelago. This is interpreted as a reaffirmation of its policy to strengthen nuclear capabilities.
On the 16th, the Korean Stamp Corporation of North Korea unveiled a new stamp design on its website depicting General Secretary Kim Jong-un of the Workers' Party directing the launch of a missile by a tactical nuclear operation unit. The design includes the phrase "Demonstration of the reality, combat effectiveness, and practical capability of the state’s nuclear combat forces."
The stamp shows General Secretary Kim directing training exercises of North Korean tactical nuclear operation units, long-range artillery units, and air force squadrons from September 25 to October 9, with a caption stating, "Respected Comrade Kim Jong-un guiding the military training of the Korean People's Army tactical nuclear operation units."
It also features content from a North Korean state media article stating, "On October 4, 2022, according to the decision of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, a new ground-to-ground intermediate-range ballistic missile crossed the Japanese archipelago and struck a designated target area in the Pacific Ocean approximately 4,500 km away."
The IRBM, presumed to be the 'Hwasong-12' at the time, passed over the northern part of the Tohoku region near Aomori Prefecture and fell into the Pacific Ocean.
On the same day, the Korean Central News Agency also issued a commentary reiterating the IRBM that crossed the Japanese archipelago last month, threatening Japan. The commentary criticized Japan for persecuting the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) and for strengthening security cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan.
