Jeongeup-si Conducts 'Disaster Response Safety Korea Drill'

[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province, announced on the 15th that it conducted the 2022 Disaster Response Safety Korea Drill to prepare in advance for large-scale disaster situations and to improve integrated response capabilities among agencies.

This drill was conducted as a “practical exercise for responding to large-scale fires and collapse accidents in multi-use facilities caused by gas explosions.”

The drill involved related organizations including Jeongeup City, Jeongeup Police Station, Jeongeup Fire Station, the 4th Battalion of Unit 8098, as well as volunteer fire brigades, the Red Cross Volunteer Society, nearby elementary, middle, and high schools, and Jeongeup Asan Hospital, with about 460 participants.

The drill simulated a scenario where an unexplained gas explosion in the kitchen of the athlete’s village at Shintaein Indoor Gymnasium caused partial collapse of the gymnasium building and a large fire, resulting in 3 deaths, 6 serious injuries, and 13 minor injuries.

The main contents included operating class-level on-site response measures according to the disaster site manual when a disaster occurs, life rescue and emergency response due to fire, role division among groups, and recovery and restoration responses.

After the drill, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training was also conducted to prepare participants to effectively respond within the golden time in case of any unforeseen accidents.

Mayor Lee Hak-su said, “Only repeated drills and thorough preparation can develop the ability to cope with disasters that may occur at any time,” and added, “I hope this serves as an opportunity to enhance the ability to respond to social disasters, recalling the October 29 Itaewon tragedy.”

He continued, “We will firmly establish an organic cooperation system with related organizations and groups, prioritizing the safety of citizens,” and added, “We will do our best to raise awareness among citizens about safety accidents.”
