[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The usually congested Gangbyeonbuk-ro, which is typically crowded with cars, will be opened for bicycle users.
On the 15th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will hold the "2022 Seoul Bicycle Parade" on the 20th, starting from Gwanghwamun Square, passing through Gangbyeonbuk-ro, and riding to World Cup Park.
This parade is designed as a course where participants can freely ride on roads usually crowded with vehicles. The riding distance is approximately 16 km from Gwanghwamun Square through Gangbyeonbuk-ro to World Cup Park, and it will be conducted as a non-competitive ride so that all participants can enjoy it. The gathering point is near the playground at Gwanghwamun Square, with assembly starting at 7 a.m. and departure at 8 a.m. Before the parade begins, participants will do warm-up stretches together, then depart sequentially in groups categorized as advanced, intermediate, and beginner (speed 25~15 km/h).
For participant safety, five ambulances, one shuttle bus, one truck, and two police cars will accompany the event to prepare for any accidents or emergencies. Additionally, about 300 bicycle safety patrols will surround the parade formation and ride along the entire route to ensure participants' safety. If any participant is unable to continue due to mid-ride withdrawal or bicycle malfunction, prompt assistance will be provided.
After the ride, participation events will be prepared for participants and citizens to enjoy. At the Peace Plaza in World Cup Park, various programs such as bicycle quizzes, Ttareungi (Seoul public bike) exhibitions, bicycle equipment displays, and simple bicycle repairs for participants will be available.
To ensure smooth progress, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will gradually restrict vehicle access on the riding route. From 6 a.m. to 9:40 a.m., one-way traffic control will be implemented in stages along the route, including Gwanghwamun Square, Sejong-ro Intersection, Seoul Station, Yongsan Station, the northern end of Hangang Bridge, Gangbyeonbuk-ro towards Ilsan, Nanji IC, and World Cup Park. To maintain order and ensure participants' safety and smooth traffic control, about 500 personnel including police officers, exemplary drivers, and event safety staff will be deployed.
Baek Ho, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Urban Transportation Office, said, “We ask all participants to prioritize safety while riding, and we hope this event will serve as an opportunity to develop a mature and safe cycling culture befitting Seoul as a bicycle city.” He added, “We will continue to strive to establish bicycles, a representative low-carbon transportation mode, as a more convenient and safe means of transportation in our daily lives.”
