Incheon City New Government Building Construction Passes Ministry of Interior Investment Review... Completion in 2027 at City Hall Playground
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The construction project for the new Incheon City Hall is gaining momentum.
The city announced on the 3rd that the new city hall construction project, aimed for completion in 2027, recently passed the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety notified Incheon City to proceed with the new city hall construction on the condition of disclosing the construction costs and undergoing a second-phase review regarding the total project cost and scale after the detailed design phase.
Earlier, the city requested the review from the Ministry in August, proposing to build the new city hall on the site of the city hall playground with a budget of 284.8 billion KRW, consisting of three basement floors and 17 above-ground floors (total floor area of 80,417㎡).
The current Incheon City Hall was completed in 1985 and has been in use for 37 years. Due to population growth and administrative district expansion, administrative demand has increased significantly, and the number of public officials has risen, leading to a shortage of office space. As a result, the city purchased nearby buildings around the city hall.
However, some departments still operate in leased buildings, causing reduced work efficiency, and facilities such as elevators and parking lots are insufficient, continuing to inconvenience citizens.
With the economic feasibility review for the new city hall nearing completion, the city plans to conduct an international design competition and detailed design next year, fulfill the conditions set by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, commence construction in 2025, and complete the new city hall by December 2027.
Above the underground parking lot of the new city hall, the city plans to create a complex building where administration and culture coexist, including rest areas, walking paths, and plazas. Additionally, the existing main building and civil service building will be remodeled for use as citizen convenience facilities, performance halls, book cafes, exhibition rooms, and archives.
