[Itaewon Tragedy] Italian Prime Minister and Swiss President Send Condolence Messages from Middle Eastern Countries
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-woo] Italy, Switzerland, and various Middle Eastern countries, where no citizens were directly affected by the Itaewon disaster, have also expressed condolences for the victims of this crushing tragedy.
According to AFP on the 30th (local time), Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Swiss President Ignazio Cassis expressed their condolences for the victims of the Itaewon crushing disaster. Prime Minister Meloni said on her Twitter account, "We share the pain of the victims and their families of the tragedy that occurred in Seoul." She added, "Italy stands close to the Korean people who are experiencing great pain and deep sorrow."
President Cassis also wrote on his Twitter, "Thinking of the Korean people. Sending condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by this tragedy."
Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, also expressed condolences for the victims of the disaster. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman released a statement on Twitter that day, saying, "We express our deep condolences and sympathy for the victims of the crushing accident that occurred in Seoul." They added, "We share the grief with Korea's leadership, the families of the victims, and the people, and wish a speedy recovery for the injured."
Earlier, the day before, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, also sent a message of condolence to President Yoon Suk-yeol regarding the disaster and mourned the victims.
Meanwhile, among the total 154 deaths in the Itaewon disaster, 26 foreign nationals from 14 countries were reported dead. These include 5 from Iran, 4 from China, 4 from Russia, 2 from the United States, 2 from Japan, and 1 each from France, Australia, Norway, Austria, Vietnam, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka.
