View original imageMinister Park attended the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee on the same day and said regarding the Korean government's decision to participate in the fleet review, "I understand that this decision was made considering North Korea's continuous provocations and the severe security situation around the Korean Peninsula."
Minister Park explained, "There have been mutual participations in fleet reviews, including during the Kim Dae-jung administration," and added, "During the Roh Moo-hyun administration, a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel entered Incheon Port flying the Self-Defense Force flag for a friendship event with our navy."
In response to the Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Jae-jung's remark that public sentiment regarding the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's use of the Rising Sun flag design should also be considered, Minister Park replied, "It is necessary to thoroughly examine how the Self-Defense Force flag is perceived by neighboring countries and the international community," and added, "The Japanese government also needs to face history with a humble attitude."
Earlier, the Ministry of National Defense and the Navy announced that they decided to send naval vessels to the fleet review to be held on the 6th of next month in Sagami Bay, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

Meanwhile, regarding the recent statement by Bonnie Jenkins, U.S. Department of State Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, at a conference that "if North Korea wants dialogue, arms control (negotiations) could be an option," Minister Park emphasized, "The U.S. Department of State has clearly responded," underscoring that the U.S. government's position remains unchanged.
