On the same day, President Yoon visited the Itaewon accident site, chaired the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters meeting at the Government Seoul Office, and continuously received reports from senior officials and Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters personnel at the Yongsan Presidential Office to monitor the situation, according to Deputy Spokesperson Lee Jae-myung of the Presidential Office.
President Yoon repeatedly stressed the swift deployment of all government capabilities, saying, "We must remember that we are public officials who bear unlimited responsibility for the safety of each and every citizen, and I urge you to carefully attend to the bereaved families of the deceased and the injured."
That afternoon, President Yoon declared Yongsan-gu, Seoul, a special disaster zone to facilitate the prompt recovery from the Itaewon accident.
"Declaring a special disaster zone less than a day after the accident occurred is a measure reflecting the highest priority of state affairs placed on the Itaewon accident recovery and follow-up actions, as stated in President Yoon's statement released this morning," explained Deputy Spokesperson Lee.
