President Biden and World Leaders Express Condolences Over Itaewon Tragedy
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] World leaders including U.S. President Joe Biden, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued statements mourning the tragedy that occurred on the 29th (local time) in Itaewon, Seoul, and expressed their willingness to provide necessary assistance.
President Biden released a statement saying, "Jill and I send our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones in Seoul," adding, "We mourn with the Korean people and wish a speedy recovery to those injured." He continued, "The alliance between our two countries is more vibrant and energetic than ever, and the bonds between our peoples are stronger than ever," and added, "The United States will stand with Korea during this tragic time."
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also posted on his Twitter account that day, "I am deeply saddened to hear about the crush incident that occurred in Seoul today," and expressed "deep condolences to the Korean people mourning this horrific tragedy, as well as to the families and friends of the victims and the injured."
Jake Sullivan, White House National Security Advisor, also wrote on Twitter, "My heart aches over the reports coming out of Seoul," and said, "We are thinking of all those who lost loved ones and hope for the swift recovery of the injured." He added, "The United States is ready to provide any support Korea needs."
U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also stated on Twitter, "Our thoughts are with all Koreans facing this very painful time and those currently responding to the incident."
French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter, "I send my sincere condolences to the Korean people and residents of Seoul over the tragedy that occurred in Itaewon," adding, "France stands with you."
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned the crush tragedy on his Twitter account, saying, "On behalf of the Canadian people, I extend my deepest condolences to the Korean people." Trudeau added, "I am concerned for all those affected by this tragedy and wish a speedy recovery to the injured."
