View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Lotte Chemical is partnering with Samsung Electronics LogiTech to expand resource circulation of packaging materials through recycling of waste vinyl.
On the 26th, Lotte Chemical announced that it signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Sustainable Material Innovation and Mutual Cooperation" with Samsung Electronics LogiTech, focusing on developing eco-friendly packaging material raw materials through recycling of waste plastics and expanding product application.
Through this agreement, Lotte Chemical will collect waste vinyl used for product packaging generated at Samsung Electronics LogiTech's logistics center, utilize it as raw material to produce high-quality packaging materials, and supply them back to Samsung Electronics LogiTech.
The waste vinyl made of PE (polyethylene) material recovered from Samsung Electronics LogiTech will be transformed into packaging stretch film through Lotte Chemical's recycled plastic material technology (PCR). PCR is a technology that sorts, crushes, and washes discarded plastics after use to produce raw materials (Pellets) in their initial form. To compensate for the deteriorated physical properties of recycled plastics, it is characterized by producing products mixed with a certain proportion of existing materials, requiring high material technology and know-how.
Both companies will pilot the recycling of waste packaging materials generated at Samsung Electronics LogiTech's Suwon Central Logistics Center and later expand it to nationwide central and regional logistics centers. They also plan to increase recycled items such as packaging stretch films, zipper bags, and air cap sheets.
A Lotte Chemical official stated, "By combining Lotte Chemical's material technology and Samsung Electronics LogiTech's logistics system, we expect to expand waste packaging material recycling and establish an efficient resource circulation business model."

In line with the global resource circulation trend, Lotte Chemical announced in May this year plans to expand sales of recycled and bio plastics to 2 trillion KRW by 2030 and increase business scale to over 1 million tons. Along with developing and expanding supply of various recycled materials in advance of increasing customer demand and global regulations, the company aims to focus on expanding environmental and social value through company-wide execution of Project Loop to establish a plastic circular economy system.
