Saudi De Facto Ruler Crown Prince Muhammad Absent from Arab Summit
Algerian Presidential Office "Informed of Non-Participation Policy Following Doctors' Recommendations"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman (37) has decided not to attend the Arab Summit scheduled for November 1-2 in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, raising speculation about possible health issues.
According to Reuters, the Algerian presidential office issued a statement on the night of the 22nd (local time) announcing that Crown Prince Muhammad expressed regret over his inability to attend the Arab Summit during a phone call with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Subsequently, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement regarding the phone call between the two leaders, stating that they discussed "bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries," but did not mention the Crown Prince's absence from the summit.
According to the Associated Press, the statement from the Algerian presidential office included that Crown Prince Muhammad told President Tebboune, "I regret not being able to attend the Arab Summit to be held in Algiers on November 1, and this is due to doctors' advice not to travel."
The AP explained that Crown Prince Muhammad had never previously decided not to travel for health reasons.
Muhammad bin Salman, the seventh son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, who will turn 87 at the end of this year, rose to power as Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler after being appointed Deputy Crown Prince (second in line to the throne) and Minister of Defense in 2015.
