Pohang City Honored with 6 Recipients of the 2022 Proud Gyeongsangbuk-do Residents Award.

The ‘Proud Gyeongbuk Resident Award’ is given annually on October 23, Gyeongbuk Residents’ Day, to residents who have dedicated themselves to the development and service of the local community.
This year, the ‘Gyeongbuk Residents’ Day Commemoration Event’ was held on the 21st at the Yeongju Seonbi World Convention Hall, where a total of 41 people from the province were selected and awarded.
Among them, six recipients from Pohang received the ‘Proud Gyeongsangbuk-do Resident Award’: the main awardees were Monk Deokhwa, President of the Pohang Buddhist Temple Federation; Younghee Lee, Secretary General of the Pohang District Council of the Korean Red Cross Volunteer Association; and Mikyung Kim, Secretary General of the Barugesalgi Pohang Council. Special awards were given to Taepil Oh, Head of the Nam-gu Branch of the Pohang City Gyeongbuk Chapter of the Korea Foodservice Industry Association; Kiseong Kim, President of the Pohang Chinese Cuisine Association; and Younghee Seong, Head of the Guryongpo Fishing Village Cooperative.
At the event, Mayor Kangdeok Lee of Pohang attended to celebrate the awardees and to promote mutual communication, exchange, and cooperation among the 23 cities and counties after being elected as the chairman of the Gyeongbuk Mayors and Governors Council for the first half of the 8th term.
Mayor Lee said, “I sincerely respect and thank the awardees who have quietly done their best and devoted themselves to their roles in the field and in their respective positions for the development of the local community. Together with Governor Cheolwoo Lee of Gyeongbuk Province, I will do my utmost to overcome the crisis of local extinction and to create momentum for region-led balanced development.”

‘Gyeongsangbuk-do Residents’ Day’ commemorates the day in 675 AD (lunar calendar September 9, solar calendar October 23) when Silla defeated 200,000 Tang troops at the Battle of Maeso Fortress, located in present-day Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, laying the foundation for the unification of the Three Kingdoms. It was designated as Residents’ Day on October 23 annually in 1996, marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
