The 8th C40 Mayors Summit consists of an opening banquet and C40 awards ceremony on the evening of the 19th local time in Buenos Aires, followed by the opening plenary on the 20th, plenary sessions 1 and 2, thematic in-depth subcommittee meetings and urban enterprise forums, thematic in-depth subcommittee meetings and urban enterprise forums on the 21st, and a closing ceremony.
At this summit, Mayor Oh participated as a panelist in Plenary Session 1. Alongside Claudia Lopez, Mayor of Bogot?, Colombia; Kate Gallego, Mayor of Phoenix, USA; and Steve Rettich, founder of ‘Access Chapter 2’ and human rights activist, he pledged to lead climate action that accompanies the climate vulnerable under the theme of ‘Collaboration for a Just and Inclusive Transition.’
Regarding the first question of the discussion, "Why is climate action the best alternative to improve citizens' lives and meet their demands?", Mayor Oh cited Seoul’s ‘Building Energy Efficiency Improvement Project’ as an example, stating that climate action has created jobs, reduced energy costs, and alleviated inequality.
In response to the question, "What policies is Seoul implementing to engage citizens in climate action?", he mentioned the Eco Mileage program, which rewards citizens based on their energy savings, and the spread of zero waste campaigns involving companies, small business owners, and citizens.
Additionally, during the summit, Mayor Oh conveyed Seoul’s commitment by participating in the 'C40 Mayors Summit Joint Statement' announced at a joint press conference held locally in Buenos Aires on the 21st. C40 selected Seoul as one of the 30 leading cities in creating green jobs and requested Mayor Oh’s participation in this summit.
The joint statement includes a pledge by C40 member city mayors to unite in creating 50 million green jobs by 2030 for a ‘just global green recovery.’ Mayor Oh stated that Seoul is actively promoting ‘accompanying the vulnerable’ based on governance with companies and environmental organizations to ensure citizen safety and resolve inequality amid the climate crisis, expecting to create 80,000 green jobs by investing a total of 10 trillion KRW by 2026.
