'Shortest-lived Disgrace' UK Prime Minister Truss... "Shorter than Lettuce"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] The resignation of UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who earned the infamous title of 'the shortest-serving prime minister in history,' has been satirized in British and American media as having a tenure 'shorter than a head of lettuce.'
On the 20th (local time), The New York Times (NYT) and others introduced an article titled "Will Prime Minister Truss Outlast a Head of Lettuce?" originally published by the British tabloid Daily Star.
The Daily Star live-streamed on YouTube for six days starting from the 14th a video showing a framed photo of Prime Minister Truss placed side by side with a head of lettuce wearing a wig resembling her hairstyle, and turned it into an article.
In this video, the lettuce, purchased for 60 pence at Tesco grocery store, became a symbol satirizing the shaky leadership of Conservative Party leader Truss, the NYT reported.
The live stream, which lasted six days, was watched by over 20,000 viewers, and social media was flooded with comments celebrating the 'victory of the lettuce.'
US CNN mocked that although the lettuce showed signs of browning during the six-day contest, it still looked fresh enough to continue the challenge for a few more days.
Prime Minister Truss announced her resignation on the same day, after only 45 days in office due to policy failures. Since taking office on the 6th, she ambitiously pushed a ?45 billion tax cut plan under the slogan of 'growth through tax cuts,' but the policy, which went against the global economic situation, plunged financial markets into chaos and drew heavy criticism.
